Expanding Quality Metrics to Include Telehealth

The use of telehealth services through a variety of modalities has increased significantly over the past decade. The advancement of mobile health devices, remote monitoring technologies and store-and-forward capabilities have supplemented the use of videoconferencing in ways that provide care to patients in areas such as chronic disease, stroke, mental and behavioral health, and dermatological care, among other clinical areas. However, even with this growth, there are still concerns about bout the utility and benefit of telehealth services, as there are no current measures to evaluate its affect in access to care, cost, effectiveness and overall patient/provider experience. The National Quality Forum (NQF) developed a framework in 2017 that provides a guide to the development of measures that assesses and evaluate telehealth in these areas. Jason Goldwater, the Project Director for this framework, will lead a discussion on how the framework was created, the way the framework can effectively be utilized, and the next steps in developing robust quality measures to provide unparalleled insight in the effect of telehealth on patient outcomes of care.
